General

Europe is home to the world’s largest single-market that consists of 28 countries accounting for more than 19% of the world’s imports and exports. As the second-largest continent in the world, Africa’s population stands at over 1.1 billion and significant policies are being implemented across the continent to expedite economic development throughout the region. The Middle East is renowned for its rich resources of crude oil which have helped it become one of the wealthiest regions in the world resulting in rapid development in countries such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Prospectivity and Mining History

Europe has a long history in mining spanning many centuries and even today is amongst one of the continent’s most modern and dynamic industries. Europe is rich in natural resources and the extraction of minerals continues to play an essential role in the European economy. Base metals, coal and gold are produced throughout the continent.

The mining sector in the Middle East is relatively undeveloped compared to other regions such as Southeast Asia and Australasia. However, significant potential exists in the region as evidenced by Jordan’s reputation as a world leader in phosphates and potash mining, Oman’s vast resources of chromite, gold, cobalt, copper and iron and the production of over 4 million ounces of gold in Saudi Arabia since 1998.

Africa’s mining industry has yet to reach its full potential, with a significant amount of the world’s global mineral reserves being found in Africa even though exploration and extraction budgets for the region have remained relatively low. Many African countries are currently working on new mining laws with the aim of encouraging domestic and foreign investment.
